Roberto Di Matteo has completed his first signing as Aston Villa manager in capturing the signature of defender Tommy Elphick From Bournemouth.
Despite only managing 12 appearances for Bournemouth last season due to injury, Tommy Elphick was instrumental in Bournemouth’s rise from League One to the Premiership. No disrespect intended, but It’s easy to forget that Bournemouth are in a league above Villa now, so for the club to capture the services of a player like Tommy Elphick is a real coup.
Di Matteo has already spoken of his delight in signing Tommy “I’m really pleased to bring Tommy to the football club. He is a fantastic player and also a fantastic character which is very important. “He knows what is required to win promotion to the Premier League from the Championship and that experience will be invaluable.”
Having watched the AVTV interview, it is clear to see Tommy is quite a level headed individual. He knows what is required and will get his head down and do what he can to get Villa back in the Premiership. Tommy cut short his honeymoon by 5 days when he heard Villa were calling. I think this shows already where he wants to be and where he thinks he can go with Aston Villa.
Interestingly, Tommy was the a captain whilst at Bournemouth, I would not be at all surprised if the new team is built around him and he is our captain next season. For me personally, I would like him to partner Jores Okore. That said, there will no doubt be a lot of comings and goings in the next month so we will see.
