Its seems Aston Villa awarding 5 year deals is the trend at the moment with Leandro Bacuna being the latest squad member to be awarded a new deal. With Both Ashley Westwood and Ciaran Clark also being awarded new deals earlier this summer and a host of new players coming in in long term contracts, there really is the sense of feeling that Tim Sherwood is building a squad for the future.
A question that could be asked though is what are contracts worth anymore? We all know what Fabian Delph did when signing his long term deal back in January. I would like to think at the very least that it is clever business by the club in that if clubs are going to come in for our best players they will have to pay big for them. It would be good if the release clause for all these long term deals could all be disclosed. There is no point in having a 5 year long term deals if you are allowed to move for peanuts at any point during it.
In regards to Bacuna’s signing, I will be the first to admit that he is not my first choice right back (Nor is Alan Hutton) but I do like the attacking elements of his game. I am glad we have kept hold of him as he is very versatile and will no doubt do the job when called upon.
