After suffering derby defeats to both Leicester and West Brom in the last week, this really was the big one to win!
What started as a fairly even games, saw Birmingham grown in confidence the longer the half went on. Villa were very direct in their approach which Birmingham, to their credit handled very well. Going in 0-0 at half time, I was left thinking that things need to change in the 2nd half. Gabby in particular looked out of sorts and already on a yellow card, I could see him getting sent off.
Sherwood made 2 changes at half time, bringing on young Jack Grealish and Jordan Ayew for Lescott and Agbonlahor. Instantly, Villa took control, with both Grealish and Ayew looking very good. The goal came from a superb cross from the left with provider Amavi’s delicious cross was met by Gestede to power home. In fairness after this point, Birmingham did not look like scoring and Villa were in total control. Both Grealish and Ayew looked quality and showed what we were missing in the first half.
I genuinely felt sorry for Ayew, he showed great pace, skill and awareness the only thing missing was a goal. Really do hope he gets a start against Liverpool the weekend!
